VOCABULARY
Region: An area with common
characteristics that are different
from those of surrounding areas
Formal Region: A region with one or more
common features that make it different from
surrounding areas. Usually has a distinct
boundary.
Functional Region: A region that contain
interactions and/or connections between
places.
Perceptual Region: A region that definitely
exists, but has characteristics and/or
boundaries that are not agreed upon.
Cultural Influence: The power
of one culture to affect the way
another culture develops
Infrastructure – The basic support
systems needed to keep an
economy going.
Examples – power, transportation, water, sanitation, & education
Push-Pull Factors
Events or reasons that cause people to leave
their homeland and migrate to another region
or place.
Push Factors – Reasons to leave a place
Pull Factors – Reasons to come to a place
Internal Migration: movement
of people within a country
Urbanization: movement of
people to cities and urban
areas
Metropolitan Area: a large city
and its surrounding suburbs
Megalopolis: a group of large
cities that has merged into one
continuous urban area
Immigration: the movement of
people from one country to
another.
Ethnic Group: A specific group
that shares a common
language, customs, and
heritage
Illegal Immigrant: someone
who has entered a country
illegally
Guest Worker: a person with
permission to work in another
country
Natural Hazards:
Extreme/Dangerous weather
and/or other conditions caused
by nature.
Tectonic Hazards:
Extreme/Dangerous conditions
caused by tectonic/earth
movement.
Hurricane: A severe tropical storm
in the Northern Hemisphere
rotating clockwise, usually with
heavy rains and winds moving at
73 miles per hour or more.
Tsunami: A great sea wave
produced by underwater earth
movements or volcanic eruption.
Province: similar to a state
Prime Minister: head of the
government; usually the leader
of the majority party
Parliament: a legislature;
similar to Congress
Import: goods or services
brought in from a foreign
country
Export: goods or services sold
to a foreign country
Bilingual: Countries where two
major languages are spoken
Market Economy:
An economic system where
production, distribution, and price
are largely determined by the
market (supply and demand)
Also known as: Free Enterprise,
Free Market, or Capitalism
