• Structure of the earth system
o The solid earth is layered with a lithosphere; hot, convecting mantle;
and dense, metallic core.
o Lithospheric plates on the scales of continents and oceans constantly
move at rates of centimeters per year in response to movements in the
mantle. Major geological events, such as earthquakes, volcanic
eruptions, and mountain building, result from these plate motions
o Land forms are the result of a combination of constructive and
destructive forces. Constructive forces include crustal deformation,
volcanic eruption, and deposition of sediment, while destructive forces

User focus groups
• Three groups so far
– DWEL K-12 and Informal ( 2 )
– Local middle school teachers, district coordinator,
university geology/education professor
• Looked at 3 resources in DLESE that have
standards data, reflecting a variety of resource
types and sources of standards associations
• Discussion included specifics of the example
resources as well as general expectations of a
library search-by-standards service
Results
• New teachers, curriculum developers and district
supervisors suggested as primary audiences
• Experienced teachers appreciate the information
in full record, but not likely to search-bystandards
• Knowing the source of the association (creator or
cataloger) is of interest but is not crucial to the
teachers’ consideration of the appropriateness of
the associations. The associations are assumed to
be guideposts but they make their own final
judgements.
Results, continued
• Prefer a looser association using the
current granularity of data
– “supports the student learning of ….”
– Include text based, background material,
exclude datasets and software
Immediate plans
• Pre-service teacher focus group
• NSDL community meeting
• Enhance and clarify published best
practices
• Review all records currently containing
standards data to ensure they are in
keeping with the best practices that hve
resulted from this work.
Future possibilities
• Moving the data to an annotation record to
enable “ who said” and “ how” information
• Perhaps include finer granularity in full
record display but continue search at one
level up
– Provide more specific content info
– To map to AAAS benchmarks
– Requires signficant manual retrofit
