How does a earthquake occur
• An earthquake also known as a tremor is the
result of a sudden release of energy in the
earth’s crust that creates seismic waves. At the
earth’s surface ,earthquakes manifest
themselves by shaking and sometimes displacing
the ground. When a large earthquake ‘s
epicentre is located offshore, the seabed
sometimes suffers sufficient displacement to
cause a tsunami. The shaking in earthquakes
can also trigger landslides and occasionally
volcanic activity
Where do the most earthquakes
occur in the world
• 80%-90% of earthquakes happen in Japan. It is
when there are convergent, divergent or
transform plate boundaries. In a convergent plate
boundary, two plates will approach each other.
The denser plate will then subduct. Friction is
produced and the ground shakes, depending on
the strength of the quake, causing an
earthquake. Shockwaves are radiated out around
the area, creating tremors. This is usually the
most destructive.

The impact on people and the
environment?
• Earthquakes and many other natural disasters will cause psychological
problems to affected people when they have lost their homes, families and
friends. It will also cause casualties when unfortunate people did not have
enough time to evacuate from their homes or did not know there was an
earthquake. They could be killed by collapsing houses, which will also cost the
people a lot of money to rebuild their homes. In developing countries where
earthquakes happen, temporary lodging will be provided. However, there might
be hygiene problems as many people are crammed into a small space, which
may in turn cause viruses to spread. Many properties and infrastructure might
be lost and the government will have to fork out a huge sum of money to assist
in rebuilding, which may in turn cause a cripple economy. Fires and other
secondary effects will also cause more casualties
Can an earthquake be
prevented?
• Preventing earthquakes would cause unimaginable destruction if

it were even possible. And it is not possible.
Regulating earthquakes, however, may prove to be beneficial to
society without damaging the natural order of Earth. Scientists
have discovered that injecting liquid into fault zones can trigger
mild earthquake activity.
In one study, researchers were able to turn earthquakes on and
off like a lamp. Perhaps releasing Earth’s energy regularly in
relatively mild tremors would limit the possibility of larger, more
destructive quakes.
One problem with this plan is that injecting anything into an
already unstable area can cause the very earthquakes it is meant
to prevent. So the answer is no
How can people work together to
restore the damage associated with
this disaster?
However, we can reduce the impact of earthquakes by a
number of strategies.
We all live on top of geological plates. These plates are
being moved by the semi-liquid mantle. These enormous
convection currents beneath the surface provide the
tremendous forces that move the plates. Some plates move
towards each other, and on other places the plates are
moving away from each other. If you live near the
boundaries of the plates the movements can have

There are a number of strategies that can be used to reduce
the impact of earthquakes. They all involve being fully
prepared for the impact.
