To study living organisms and their corresponding habitat location on the ocean floor. 2. To gain an understanding of how specific formations on the ocean floor are connected to processes within the earth. Ocean Floor Features • Continental shelf • Continental Slope • Abyssal Plain • Ocean Trench • Seamount • Guyots • Mid Ocean Ridge Continental Shelf • Gently sloping submerged surface extending from the shoreline. Continental Slope • Seaward edge of the continental shelf which is steeper than the continental shelf. It marks the boundary between the continental crust and oceanic crust. Abyssal Plain flat sediment-covered areas of ocean floor Ocean Trench • Long, narrow creases in the ocean floor that form the deepest part of the ocean. Seamount • Submerged volcanic peaks that dot the ocean floor.
