Hydrosphere Unit: Transitioning to the
last part of the unit
• Ocean Pollution has an effect on living
organisms and their habitats.
• Technology has helped scientists:
1. Gain a better understanding of ocean
organisms
2. Gather information of how pollution has
affected organisms on the ocean floor
3. Understand some physical features of the
ocean floor
Mapping the Ocean Floor
• MAPPING THE OCEAN FLOOR IS IMPORTANT FOR
MANY REASONS:
1. To study living organisms and their
corresponding habitat location on the
ocean floor.
2. To gain an understanding of how specific
formations on the ocean floor are
connected to processes within the
earth.
Ocean Floor Mapping
• Ocean Floor Mapping: How it is done and
Why it is important
Mapping the Ocean Floor
• Which of these 3 different ways of
mapping the ocean floor do you
think is the most common?
A. Satellites
B. Sonar
C. Submersibles
Objective: Students will
be able to describe some
features of the ocean
floor in order to identify
and label the structures
based on their
appearance and location.
Ocean Floor Features
• Continental shelf
• Continental Slope
• Abyssal Plain
• Ocean Trench
• Seamount
• Guyots
• Mid Ocean Ridge
Continental Shelf
• Gently sloping submerged
surface extending from the
shoreline.
Continental Slope
• Seaward edge of the
continental shelf which is
steeper than the continental
shelf. It marks the boundary
between the continental
crust and oceanic crust.
Abyssal Plain
flat sediment-covered areas
of ocean floor
Ocean Trench
• Long, narrow creases in the
ocean floor that form the
deepest part of the ocean.
Seamount
• Submerged volcanic peaks that
dot the ocean floor. Steep-sided
cone-shaped peaks are found on
the floors of all oceans
Mid Ocean Ridge
• A long mountain range on the ocean
floor and it has a rift valley located at
the center of the mountain chain
–RIFT VALLEY: valley caused by
mountains on each side
