The Earth’s
Dynamic Crust
Purpose: Learn how
the Earth’s crust has
slowly changed over
time.
Seeing is Believing…
Please look at the map up
on the wall.
Do you notice any patterns?
How do you think they
formed?
What is the driving force
behind all of this?
Patterns
East Coast of S. America
seems to fit into the West
Coast of Africa
Southern Coast of
Arabian Peninsula fits into
North-East Coast of Africa
Is there any evidence?
If you were a scientist, what
would you look for to prove that
these places were once
connected?
Is the fact that the LOOK like
they fit together good enough?
Brainstorm, show me you are
just as smart as any boring
scientist out there!!!!
Teachers are Idiots
 Back in the day, many students
said, “Hey teacher, it looks like
South America and Africa fit
together. Did they used to?”
 The teacher would respond, “Of
course not. The continents don’t
move, it is just a coincidence.
 BUT, they were wrong. And the
kids were right.
 BUT they had NO EVIDENCE.
No Bones About It.
 Fossil Evidence
 Remains
of identical plant and
animal species found on S.
America and African Coasts.
 Plant seeds too large to be
carried by wind & too fragile to
survive ocean journey.
 Animal remains were of a fresh
water creature that would not
have survived salt water journey.
Mesosaurus
Glossopteris
Rock Solid Evidence.
Rock Formations match on
opposite sides of the
Atlantic.
 Mountain Ranges.
 Coal Deposits
 Glacial Deposits
