pH - Potential hydrogen
• pH – pH means a
measure of the acidity
or alkalinity of a
solution .Increasing
with the decreasing of
alkalinity and
decreasing with the
increasing acidity.
• The pH scale is 0 - 14
Logarithm of pH
• A logarithm scale is a
scale of measurement
that uses the
logarithm of a
physical quantity
instead of the
quantity itself.
Why is ph important?
• pH determines the
•
balance of reactions
which occur in aquatic
systems.
7.3 is the pH for human
blood and if it is above
or below range
symptoms and disease
will occur.
Lake affected by abandoned mine
and acid rain.

Iron is one of the
most abundant
elements in the
universe, and
makes up Earths
crusts. It can be
found in the sun
as well as stars in
considerable
amounts. Other
than making up
the crust of the
Earth, iron is a
vital part of plant
and animal life and
serves as a
oxygen carrier in
hemoglobin. Iron’s
Atomic number is
26, and has an
atomic weight of
55.847 mole. The
melting point of
iron is particularly
high,
1535°C(2795°F).
There are many
symptoms to look
for when one has
iron defieciency
such as:
o Fatigue
o Shortness of
breath
o Chest pains
If your iron
defienciency
worsens you can
have heart
problems,
infections,
problems with
growth and
development of
children, and
multiple other
N
defects.
In order to improve the iron level in you
blood people should eat:
Red meat, egg yolks, spinach, raisins, iron
rich cereals, mollusks, turkey, beans, liver,
and artichokes.
P
Even though iron
is water is usually
considered a
health problem, it
provides a health
benefit. Small
concentrations are
essential to
human health,
because it helps
transfer oxygen in
the blood. The
majority of water
supplies in the US
provide about 5
percent of humans
daily requirements
of iron.
N
If there are
traces of
iron in
your water
you will
have
reddish
yellow or
brown
sediments
in the
water or
you can
have foul
tasting
water.
Solutions
to iron in
the water
are either
filtering
their
water,
replacing
old
piping, or
add salt
using a
water
softener.

Alkalinity or Not?
• Alkalinity in water is the capacity to
neutralize acids.
• Alkaline helps maintain proper pH levels.
• The EPA reports that a household tap
water should have about 500 ppm of
alkalinity.
• The signs of alkalinity are a soda taste,
and dry skin.
Elements and Alkaline
• Two of the main elements found in
•
•
•
alkaline water are magnesium and
calcium.
Magnesium is the sixth most
abundant element in Earth’s crust.
The atomic number is 12 and weight
is 24.305.
The melting point is 650 degrees
Celsius and the boiling point is 1090
degrees Celsius.
Calcium Factoids
• Calcium (Ca) is the fifth most abundant
element.
• Its atomic weight is 40.08 and the atomic
number is 20.
• Calcium is found in leaves, bones, teeth
and shells.
• Coagulation or the clotting of blood cells
needs calcium for normal heart beats and
blood pressure.
