Read each of the following questions
carefully. Answer all parts to the very
best of your ability. After each
question just click the mouse to go to
the next question.
Using the graphic above, explain how sedimentary rock is formed.
Watch the
short slide
show a few
times.
What type of rock was
formed around this
dinosaur?
Why is the type of rock
you answered above the
only rock we might find
bones from a dinosaur?
Scientists in Colorado discovered
this mass dinosaur grave site. The
scientists believe the dinosaurs
were caught in a flash flood. The
photo to the left shows the bones of
many dinosaurs jumbled up. Above
two leg bones embedded in….can’t
tell you what kind of rock because
that would be cheating 

Mount Rushmore, located in South
Dakota, was carved from a
mountain of granite. Granite is an
igneous rock.
Describe how
igneous rock is
formed. (if you can
do that than you
know how this
granite was
formed. Artists
spent 14 years
blasting and
banging the
granite into past
Presidents.)

If I could dig all the
way to the center of
the Earth would the
temperature increase
or decrease?
Side note:
It is impossible to dig
to the center of the
Earth
What type of rock is formed quickly
when lava flows into water?
Volcanoes National Park
This is a picture of a road
near Kilauea, the world’s
most active volcano.
Kilauea is located in
Volcanoes National Park in
Hawaii
The lava actually flowed
right over the road,
cooled and turned
into….can’t tell you what
kind of rock, that would
be cheating 
Hey lady are you
crazy?
Shale
Sedimentary Rock
To turn shale into slate
the right conditions are
needed. (Heat,
pressure and time)
What kind of rocks, like
slate, are formed under
those conditions?
Slate
???????
The roofer in this picture
is attaching the slate
shingles to the roof by
driving a nail through
predrilled holes in the
shingle.
This roof is covered by
slate shingles. Some of
the shingles were
expertly cut in a scallop
pattern

Kiowa Indian Legend of Devil’s Tower
Long ago a group of
warriors were out
hunting. They were
suddenly surprised by
a giant bear. The
warriors consulted a
large wise tree which
told them to climb the
rock to escape the
bear. The men obeyed
the tree and climbed
the rock. The bear
followed, clawing his
way up the rock. The
bear, unable to get to
he top, fell victim to the
warriors. His claw
marks can be seen
today .
Nice story
but we
know the
science
that
created
Devil’s
Tower.
What kind
of rock
process
created
Devil’s
Tower?
Bear claw marks? I think not
but cool story
Why do scientists
say the creation of
rocks happen in a
cycle?

Dude- how
hard is that
rock?
Explain how you
tested rock
hardness, in the
best way you can

What igneous rock is used in
both of these products?
And
What about this rock makes it
perfect for scrubbing skin?
A whole rock, shaped and
glued on a piece of wood for
Mrs. DeJohn to rub her feet
with 
Did you fail?
