Warm Up
• Vocab Review
• A definition will appear on the screen
• Find the correct term on your flashcards
and write it on your warm up sheet
1. The gently sloping section of
the continental margin
located between the
shoreline and the continental
slope
2. Major region of ocean floor
made of oceanic crust (deep
end of pool)
3. A long, undersea mountain
chain that forms along the
floor of the major oceans
4. Major region of ocean floor
made of continental crust
(shallow end of pool)
Answers
1. Continental Shelf
2. Deep Ocean Basin
3. Midocean Ridge
4. Continental Margin
Earth’s Oceans
• Earth is very different from other planets
in our solar system
• Main reason is WATER
Earth’s Oceans
• The amount of water on Earth gives it the
nickname:
• “Blue Planet”
• 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water
• More than 95 percent of the underwater world
remains unexplored
This image represents the
total volume of water on
Earth (blue sphere)
compared to the volume of
Earth.
Where is most of the Earth’s water found?
Global Ocean – 5 main oceans
Which hemisphere (North or South)
is mostly made up of oceans?
Divisions of the Global Ocean
Pacific Ocean - the largest and has the
greatest depth
Divisions of the Global Ocean
Atlantic – about half the size of the
Pacific and not quite as deep
Divisions of the Global Ocean
Indian – slightly smaller than the Atlantic,
largely a Southern Hemisphere body
Divisions of the Global Ocean
Arctic – about 7 percent the size of the
Pacific, partly covered by ice
Divisions of the Global Ocean
Southern – newest named ocean (2000),
Also known as: Great Southern Ocean,
Antarctic Ocean and South Polar Ocean
surrounds
Antarctica up
to 60° S
latitude
How did the Oceans Form?
• 4.5 billion years ago there were no oceans
• Volcanic gases began to form Earth’s
atmosphere
How did the Oceans Form?
• About 4 billion years ago the Earth cooled
enough for water vapor to condense
• The water began to fall as rain
• The rain filled the deeper levels of the Earth’s
surface and the first oceans began to form
How did the Oceans Form?
• The remaining half is believed to
have come from comets containing
ice colliding with Earth
• Since the plates are moving, the
oceans have changed location/size
throughout history.
 65 million years ago, the South Atlantic Ocean was
much smaller than it is today.
 Will the oceans stay as they are now in the future?
Why or why not?
Graphing the Volume of the Oceans
• Use the data below to make a bar graph of the
volume of the oceans. Assign a different color
to each ocean (color each bar and ocean
name).
• Pacific Ocean = 660 million km3
• Atlantic Ocean = 310 million km3
• Indian Ocean = 264 million km3
• Southern Ocean = 72 million km3
• Arctic Ocean = 19 million km3
• Don’t forget to include:
• Title
• Labels for each axis
• Glue on page 44 of ISN
