CHARACTER CHANGE
TASK 1:



Divide into groups of 3-4. Collect an A3 piece of paper for your
group. Fold your paper in half so you have a crease down the
middle.
On one side draw Tristan’s character as he is at the start of the film.
Around the outside write down words which describe his character
at this point.
On the other side of your paper draw Tristan’s character as he is at
the end of the film. Around the outside write down words which
describe how character his character has changed.

In this scene Tristan is a shy and
unconfident shop boy. He
considers Victoria to be a better
person than him simply because
she is rich and beautiful. He
stumbles over his words when
talking to her and is extremely
nervous. Tristan has low selfesteem and does not stand up for
himself when Humphrey
challenges him in the street and
insults him. He also cannot tell
that Victoria is using him for what
he can give her. She does not care
for him at all. Tristan is trusting
and naïve with little life
experience. He is somewhat
childish and idealistic.

In the closing scene Tristan has
changed considerably. Instead of
throwing stones at Victoria’s
window like a school boy he
knocks at her front door. This
shows he has more confidence in
himself. He is no longer fooled by
Victoria’s beauty and can see how
shallow she is. Tristan tells her to
“grow up” and get over herself. He
also stands up for himself when
Humphrey challenges him to a
duel. Tristan has developed into a
strong, confident person who is
now King of Stormhold. He has
much more life experience and
appears to have grown from a boy
into a man.

ESSAY INTRO

In the film “Stardust” directed by Matthew
Vaughn an important character who changes is
Tristan Thorn. Techniques which help show this
change are costume, camera angles and
dialogue. The change in Tristan’s character is
important because it helps show the main idea
in the film which is that appearances can be
deceiving and not to be afraid to be yourself.
