History of Syphilis
Many scientists debate on how syphilis came to
be or at least got around.
Syphilis first hit Europe in1493 during Columbus'
return from the new world.
There is evidence that syphilis was around in
ancient Chinese times.
The disease was discovered by Phillipe Ricord in
the 19th century.
Syphilis has been with mankind for thousands of
years.
Characteristics
Syphilis is caused by an organism called Treponema
pallidum (a type of bacterium called a spirochete.)
Primary Syphilis: Chancres can occur almost anywhere
on the body.
Secondary Syphilis: While chancer is healing, a rash
resembling measles or chicken pox occurs. Later
symptoms are fever, indigestion and headaches.
Latency: All symptoms disappear for weeks up to thirty
years
Tertiary syphilis: Most destructive stage of the disease;
Gummy or rubbery tumors can occur. Attacks
cardiovascular and central nervous systems which can
be fatal. Can attack walls of the heart.
Syphilis contains DNA or RNA not both!!
Virus?
No, syphilis is a bacteria.
Treatment
If syphilis is still in its early stages, a simple shot
of penicillin can cure it.
If you've had syphilis for over a year, you would
just need additional doses.
Treatment will kill the syphilis bacterium and
prevent further damage, although, it will not repair
any damage previously done.
