DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT OF
OTITIS EXTERNA
Pet Ear Disease Is Common
>15% - 20% of all canine patients
>Canine incidence approaches 50% in
humid climates
>6%-7% of all feline patients
>Ranges from mild erythema to severe otitis
media
>Determining the cause is often difficult

The Three Ps Of Ear Disease
> Primary cause of ear disease needs to be identified and can
include:
Parasites
Allergies (most common cause)
Foreign bodies
Scaling disorders
Other dermatological diseases
> Predisposing factors are those that directly change the
microclimate of the ear canal
> Perpetuating factors that prevent normal resolution of ear
disease, e.g.
Bacteria
Yeasts
Secretions from otitis media
Contact allergies from drugs

The 4 Step Approach To Otitis Externa
1. Examine the skin and ears
Check the skin to identify potential primary causes of
the ear disease
Exam the ear canal
for exudates,
growths or other
pathological changes
Always evaluate the
the integrity of the
eardrum as this
impacts the choices
of medications &
flushing agents

2. Cytological Evaluation
of the otic exudate of
every infected ear to
determine potential
etiology

3. Flush and suction the ears to remove
dried medications and exudates so that
the canal epithelium can be evaluated.
Be sure the flushing
agent is not ototoxic
when the eardrum is
not intact.

4. Develop a treatment plan for otitis
externa after the skin and ears are
evaluated, the cytology is done and the
ear canal is cleansed
