Four principles of proper waste
management – all violated by BBMP
Garbage should not be given loose – to avoid manual
handling, infringing human dignity of wastecollector , and leachate from leaking.
2. Garbage should not be exposed to the environment
and cause stink and air-borne bacteria.
3. Garbage should not be dumped on the ground to
avoid feeding of garbage by rodents, dogs, cows, etc. ,
become a breeding ground for flies, bacteria, vectors,
etc. and spread diseases.
4. Garbage should not be visible to the public and
create an eye-sore and unsightly, unaesthetic
surroundings.
1.
Minimum specifications for infrastructure for
collection of wastes required - here garbage is
collected loose and exposed to the environment
Dumping of loose mixed garbage on the ground from
push-carts, by PKs, & auto-tippers and exposure of
garbage to environment in violation of Ministry of
Environment & Forest Rules
Manual handling of garbage in violation of MoEF
Rules and Prevention of Manual Scavenging Act
Manual filling of garbage into compactor defeating
purpose of having compactor which is supposed to
eliminate manual handling and lift garbage mechanically
Manual filling of compactor with garbage
Invest in basic infrastructure
Ensure apartments/commercial establishments
have such bins with lids, wheels and handles –
individual households to have two small bins & 1 bag
Mechanical lifting of apartment
/commercial establishment bin into
containerised , lidded tempo
Multi-bin, lidded waste collection trolley
for collection of street waste
Secondary waste collection in colour-coded bins
required at street level, markets, collection
points, etc., as per MoEF Rules
CAG has castigated BBMP for not placing bins
for secondary waste collection at street level,
collection points and markets
Containerised auto with lidded bin for collection
of household waste to avoid loose garbage and
exposure of garbage to environment
Compactor mechanically emptying streetside bin to avoid manual handling
Please invest in basic SWM infrastructure to
make Bangalore garbage-free, clean and green
Let’s change Bangalore’s sobriquet from
‘garbage city to ‘garden city’ again
Thank you
