 Think about a sport you like to watch
or play. List all the equipment an
athlete must wear who plays that
sport.
 Explain why that equipment is
necessary.
 When you are finished, be thinking
about what sort of protective wear is
necessary in the lab.
 You will be able to define and identify PPE.
 You will demonstrate how to use and properly
dispose of PPE.
 It is VERY important that you practice proper
safety protocols in the laboratory. We will be
working with acids, bases, and mutagens this
year.
 Complete a vocabulary square for:
 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
 Safety equipment issued to help employees in
protecting themselves from the hazards of
their work environments. PPE includes fire
retardant or chemical-proof clothing, gloves,
hard hats, respirators, safety spectacles, etc.
 You need a picture of each with the following
and the brief descriptions next to each:
 Gloves must be worn when handling chemicals
as wells as microorganisms like bacteria.
 Goggles are always worn in the lab unless the
instructor tells you otherwise.
 Lab coats should be worn at all times in the lab
for protection against dangerous chemicals.
They should never be worn when eating or
drinking.

 Take out your bellwork sheet, and compare
and contrast sports equipment with PPE using
a T chart.
 When you are finished think about how you
would teach a new student about the PPE we
will be using in the class. Be ready to answer.
