 Two membranes: a smooth
outer, and a smooth folded
membrane – with numerous
layers
 Mitochondria provide the
energy a cell needs to move,
divide, produce secretory
products, contract - in short,
they are the power centers of
the cell. They are about the
size of bacteria but may have
different shapes depending
on the cell type.

Inner membrane is shaped into folds called cristae.

Is caused by damage in the in energy producing cells- called
“power plants” in the brain
Symptoms:
1. heart failure
2. deafness
3. blindness, or limited sight
4. vomiting
5. droopy eyelids
6. movement disorders
