Sausage-shaped, about the
size of bacteria
Two membranes: a smooth
outer, and a smooth folded
membrane – with numerous
layers
Mitochondria provide the
energy a cell needs to move,
divide, produce secretory
products, contract - in short,
they are the power centers of
the cell. They are about the
size of bacteria but may have
different shapes depending
on the cell type.
Inner membrane is shaped into folds called cristae.
Above is a picture cut lengthwise to the inside of the mitochondria.
Is caused by damage in the in energy producing cells- called
“power plants” in the brain
Symptoms:
1. heart failure
2. deafness
3. blindness, or limited sight
4. vomiting
5. droopy eyelids
6. movement disorders
