Food Chains
Sunlight provides energy for
plants.
Producers
• Plants convert
sunlight into glucose
which is food
energy.
• They produce their
own food.
• When plants are
eaten they produce
food energy for all
other life on earth.
Herbivores
• Herbivores only eat
plants or producers.
• Insects or animals
can be herbivores.
• They are also known
as first order
consumers.
• Consumers must eat
to get their energy.
Omnivores
• Omnivores eat
plants and other
animals.
• Most animal species
are omnivores,
including humans.
• Omnivores are also
consumers.
Carnivores
• Carnivores eat only
meat.
• They are at the top
of their food chain.
• Therefore, they are
the highest order of
consumer.
Decomposers
• Decomposers are
fungi and friendly
bacteria.
• Decomposers help
break down dead
plants and animals.
