The scale of the problem
• 40% of year 1 (5/6
year olds) pupils in
Bristol have decay
• On average they have
4 decayed teeth
• Last year Bristol
dental hospital gave a
GA to 1382 children
to take their teeth out

• Can be removed easily every day
• Hard to removed if left for a few days.
• Using a toothbrush will stop this from happening.
• Add fluoride toothpaste to inhibit acid formation.

• Firm evidence that oral bacteria can be
linked to:
• Heart Disease
• Diabetes
• Strokes
• Premature & Still Births
• Aspiration pneumonia
• Using a toothbrush will stop this from happening.
• Add fluoride toothpaste to inhibit acid formation.

Gum Disease
• Start brushing when first tooth appears
• or at weaning, which ever comes first.
• Children not encouraged to brush will
suffer from this in adulthood.
• Using a toothbrush will stop this from happening.

Decay
• Keep sugar for meal times only
• Use a fluoride toothpaste twice a day
• Fluoride toothpaste will stop this from happening.

Feeding or nursing caries

cup & diluted with water.

What we have done so far
• Brushing for life –
toothpaste scheme
• Good evidence base for
effectiveness of
toothpaste distribution
• Increased fluoride
content to 1000ppm or
above.
Change in fluoride advice
Universal
• Toothpaste, toothbrush and leaflet provided for
all children in their first year.
– Parents may need encouragement to use pack
– Support to use the paste responsibly
• Encourage early check up with a dentist
Other initiatives:
• Parent craft courses.
• Safe snack times in nursery & school
• Supported brushing time
• Include dental initiative in yearly action
plan. (often linked to Smile Month)
• Training for early years staff to enable
– Targeting of hard to reach families
– Regular support for parents making difficult
behaviour changes
