“Zeta Rod®systems: Green & Sustainable Technology
Solutions for Evaporative Cooling Water Treatment”
Zeta Corporation
Company Background
Initial research starts in the early 1990’s for fouling prevention in solvent
extraction processes for the copper mining industry in Arizona.
Zeta Corporation earns first U.S. Patent for the Zeta Rod and incorporates its
business in 1996. Process patents follow in enhanced flocculation and RO
membrane biofouling prevention.
Technology is described and well grounded in advanced principles and theory of
chemistry and physics. Zeta Corporation principals bring strong career experience
in industrial water treatment methods and water chemistry.

Water Treatment for Chiller-Cooling Towers
Primary application of a Zeta Rod system is to the condenser water loop.
Traditional Chemical Programs Utilize:
Anti-scaling chemicals: prevent scaling of condenser & tower fill
Biocide: control bacteria growth & biofouling
Corrosion inhibitor: prevent metal corrosion
Acid: pH control (less and less common)
Regular visits by chemical sales/service representative to monitor & make
adjustments to system, inventory chemicals, perform water analyses, re-order
chemicals
Problems with Chemical Treatments and Programs:
High recurring cost (chemicals continue to increase in price)
High maintenance in monitoring and analyses
Not a green solution.
Storage, handling and disposal of chemical products potentially hazardous

What is a Zeta Rod System?
The Zeta Rod forms a Capacitor within the water system and increases surface
charge density on suspended colloidal particles causing them to repel one another

What does a Zeta Rod do?
Prevents the formation of mineral deposits
Prevents the formation of biofilms
Eliminates existing biofilms
Prevents microbially induced corrosion (mic)
Maintains clean heat transfer surfaces
Reduces or eliminates chemicals

What a Zeta Rod is not
Zeta Rod is not a biocide
Zeta Rod is not a filter
Zeta Rod is not a corrosion inhibitor

How does Zeta Rod control scale?
By increasing the zeta potential of colloidal particles and
wetted surfaces, a strong dispersion is created which prevents
particles from forming scale deposits.
By eliminating biofilm, the Zeta Rod removes the primary
“glue” that holds scale in place, causing old scale build-up in
many situations to fall off.

Problems With Biocides
Biocides are designed to “kill” bacteria, not to
remove, or prevent formation of biofilm
Bacteria growth takes place within biofilm
Bacteria can go into “dormant” status when in a
biofilm
Bacteria in biofilm can be as much as 2 to 500 times
more resistant to biocides
Insufficient dosages of biocides can result in
bacteria with higher tolerance

How does the Zeta Rod control biofilm?
Reducing surface tension of water allows existing biofilms to superhydrate and easily be removed by turbulence of fluid.
The Zeta Rod causes hydration, swelling, and loosening of biological
deposits leading to the removal of fouling from wetted surfaces.

Biofouling Vs Algae Growth
It is Important to differentiate between biofouling & algae growth.
Biofouling is caused by bacteria in the water. Biofouling can cause
catastrophic failure in equipment due to microbially induced corrosion
(MIC). Biofouling has a severe impact on heat transfer coefficients.
Biofouling can take place in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
Algae is a photosynthetic plant that requires oxygenation, nutrients,
sunlight and a substrate on which to grow. Algae typically occurs in
distribution decks and sunlit areas of the cooling tower basin and
structure. Does not typically represent a problem as far as performance is
concerned with the equipment (algae does not grow inside heat
exchangers).

Biofouling Vs Algae Control
The Zeta Rod is very efficient in controlling biofouling. It
does this by eliminating existing biofilms and preventing the
formation of new biofilms. Extremely low bacteria counts are
typically maintained in cooling towers, without the use of any
added biocides.
The best way to control algae growth is by depriving it of
sunlight or nutrients. The Zeta Rod helps prevent the
formation of the substrate on which algae grows, reducing the
potential for algae growth.

Corrosion Control
The Zeta Rod allows evaporative cooling systems to operate in
conditions not favorable to corrosion ( pH around 9.0)

Benefits for Green Buildings: LEED strategies
The use of the Zeta Rod can help LEED teams with their strategy for obtaining LEED
certification points in the following areas:
WE 1.1. Water Efficient Landscaping - By allowing the end user to use cooling
tower blowdown for irrigation purposes the end user can move towards achieving
the 50% reduction of potable water use for landscaping purposes.
WE 2 Innovative Waste Water Technologies: The cooling tower blowdown can
be used also as gray water to flush toilets and urinals thus reducing the use of
potable water for building sewage.
WE 3.1. Water Use Reduction: once again, by having chemical free blowdown
water, the water can be utilized in the gray water system of the facility. Also, if
the cooling tower could be operated at higher cycles of concentration (water may
not qualify for irrigation) the amount of water used and disposed could be
reduced.
