1. An engineer is testing a new design for the shipping
department at a computer company. As part of the
implementation process, the engineer keeps track of how
many days pass between the time a customer orders a
computer and the time the computer is shipped. The data
for 15 customers is shown below.

a. 5
b. 7
c. 8
d. 10
2. You are doing a laboratory investigation.
The materials you are using include
beakers, water, vinegar, lemon juice and
pH paper. What safety equipment should
you use?
a. Fire blanket
b. Heat-resistant gloves and fire blanket
c. Laboratory apron and safety goggles
d. Paper towels
3. You and your friend observe lot of earthworms on a
sidewalk one morning after a heavy rain. Using
your knowledge of science, which would be the
best explanation for this observation?
a. Earthworms come up to eat insects found on sidewalks
after a heavy rain.
b. Birds, such as robins, don’t eat earthworms when it is
raining.
c. Earthworms come up to get a drink of water.
d. Earthworms come up during a heavy rain to avoid
drowning.
4. At one time, people believed in the theory of spontaneous
generation. It suggested that living things could arise from
nonliving matter. For example, according to this theory, flies
could form from rotting meat. Which of the following
observations led to the replacement of the theory of
spontaneous generation?
a. Flies are not found on rotting meat that is protected by
cheesecloth.
b. Some meats have flies before they are rotting.
c. Flies can be found in places where there is no rotting meat.
d. Flies are not the only living things found near rotting meat.
5. Scientists must try to avoid bias in scientific
research. Which one of theses activities is not
only unethical, but would also be likely to lead to
bias?
a. Performing an experiment several times to see the
difference in outcomes.
b. Commenting on work of other scientists.
c. Doing experiments that involve living things.
d. Experimenting secretly with deadly organisms in a
lab located in a residential neighborhood.
6. A scientist is researching a substance that can be
burned like gasoline but does not release harmful
gases into the atmosphere. How might this
research most likely impact society and the
environment?
a. It might result in a product that prevents global
warming.
b. It might cause people to pursue careers in scientific
research.
c. It might result in a product that eliminates the need for
transportation.
d. It might cause people to take public transportation instead
of driving so much.
7. In 1781, William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus. It
became the first planet discovered through the use of a
telescope. The planet had actually been seen many times
before without a telescope, but because of the lack of detail
it was assumed to be a star or a comet and largely ignored.
What does this example illustrate about the advancement of
science?
a. Technology is often required to advance science.
b. All scientific discoveries are made by more than one person.
c. Scientific discoveries are often prevented by limited access to
technology.
d. Scientists always reject discoveries when they are first presented.
8. Commercial companies are developing aircraft that can carry
passengers into space. At the present time, the cost of such
travel is extremely high. Individual passengers can take the
trip for fees that average about $30,000. Which of these
represents a political constraint to the technology?
a. Many people will not be able to afford the trip.
b. The aircraft can only be launched from certain locations.
c. Government officials may pass laws to prevent the use of
such aircraft.
d. Some people think it is not a good idea for people other than
astronauts to travel to space.
9. Designs for technological improvements should
consider the values of society. Which of these
directly relates to decisions involving economic
value?
a. A fabric is produces to be better for the
environment, but results in a more expensive
product.
b. A builder develops a better way to build homes on barrier
islands.
c. A blood test enables people to discover their potential to
develop a health condition.
d. A swimsuit is manufactured that enables swimmers to
glide through the water more easily.
10. A group of students is given the procedure for an experiment
and data collected by another class that previously did the
experiment. The group of students is asked to check the
accuracy of the other class’s data. (2006 half-length)
How could the students check the other class’s data for
accuracy?
a. by graphing data that the other class collected
b. by drawing conclusions from the other class’s data
c. by repeating the experiment with the same procedures
and comparing data
d. by adding another variable and repeating the experiment with
modified procedures
11. Which unit of measurement do
astronomers use when measuring the
distance between two stars found in the
Milky Way? (2009)
a. meter
b. light-year
c. kilometer
d. astronomical unit
12. The instructions for an experiment direct
the students to put a liquid into a beaker
and use a hot plate to heat the liquid to
50 C.
In your Answer Document, describe two
safety precautions the students need to
take while heating the liquid. (2 points)
(2009)
The students should wear goggles to
protect their eyes. The students
should not touch the beaker with their
hands once the heating has begun.
They should use heat-proof glove or
holder.
13. What explains the relationship between
hours of sunlight and seasons? (2008)
a. the rotation of Earth on its axis
b. the tilt of Earth’s axis relative to the sun
c. the location of Earth’s orbit in the solar system
d. the motion of the moon as it travels
around the Earth
14. Which diagram shows the relative
positions of Earth (E), the sun (S) and
the moon (M) during a full moon?
(2007)
See the 2007 on the Ohio Department of
Education for the test question and
answer.
15. Which phenomena occur as a result of the
gravitational attraction between the moon
and Earth? (2007)
a. eclipses
b. ocean tides
c. season changes
d. phases of the moon
16. What change would occur if Earth’s
rate of rotation significantly
increased? (2007)
a. The year would be shorter.
b. The year would be longer.

17. The diagrams show the sun, Earth and
moon in different positions relative to one
another. (2010)
Which diagram shows the correct
arrangement of the sun (S), Earth (E) and
moon (M) relative to the location of high
tides?
See the 2010 test and answer document on
the Ohio Department of Education
website.
18. Use the following diagram and information to answer question 18.
(2006)
As shown in this diagram, Earth’s axis is tilted. The diagram also shows
four positions of Earth in its path around the sun. Ohio
experiences four seasons that occur while Earth orbits the sun.
In your Answer Document, use the diagram to do the following:
Explain one reason Ohio experiences a change in seasons.
Identify the part of Earth’s orbit (labeled, I, II, III, or IV) during which
Ohio experiences winter.
Identify the part of Earth’s orbit (labeled, I, II, III, or IV) during which
Ohio experiences summer.
In a way that supports our answers above, explain how the position of
Earth in its orbit is related to the timing of winter or summer (4
points)
“ Ohio experiences a change in seasons
because of Earth’s tilted axis. When Ohio is
tilted away from the Sun it gets less
concentrated sunlight, and it is winter but
when Ohio is tilted toward the Sun it gets
more concentrated sunlight, and it is
summer. Ohio experiences summer in part
III. Since Earth is tilted on its axis, when it
orbits around the Sun some of the Earth
experiences summer while the rest
experiences winter.”
