• Cancer is the
second-leading
cause of death in the
U.S.
• Cancer is responsible
for 1 of every 4
deaths in the U.S.
Prevention
• Smoking causes cancer.
• In 2005, 175,000 deaths from tobacco
use.
• Sun damage causes cancer.
• In 2005, 1 million new cases of skin
cancer.
Cancer
One third of all cancer deaths
are related to:
• poor nutrition
• physical inactivity
• unhealthy weight
What is Cancer?
• A condition where cells become
abnormal.
• There are variety of causes of
cancer.
To Prevent Cancer…
• Do not smoke.
• Eat a variety of healthy foods, with an
emphasis on plant sources.
• Be physically active.
• Maintain a healthy weight throughout
life.
• Avoid or limit consumption of alcoholic
beverages.
Teen Smoking
• If a person does not
start smoking before
they graduate from
high school, odds are
they never will.
Teen Smoking
• New research shows that teens can get
hooked on nicotine more quickly than adults.
• But all they are getting hooked on is…
• formaldehyde, which is used to
preserve dead frogs
• cyanide, which is found in rat
poison
• nicotine, which is the addictive
substance and a potent insecticide
Healthy Foods
Choose:
• A variety of 5 or more servings of fruits
and vegetables.
• Whole grains over processed grains
and sugars.
• Low-fat, unprocessed meats.
• Foods that help maintain a healthy
weight.

Why eat a variety of Fruits and
Vegetables?
Antioxidants!!!
• These chemicals help reduce risk of
certain cancers.
• They are found in high concentrations in
very colorful fruits and vegetables,
such as blueberries, broccoli, spinach,
citrus fruits, cauliflower, tomatoes and
tomato products, and pumpkin.
Why eat a variety of Fruits and
Vegetables?
Also…
• They provide fiber.
• They are low calorie and low-fat.
• They provide vitamins and minerals to
help your body grow.
Be Physically Active
• Engage in 60 minutes of physical
activity at least 5 days a week.
Tips to be more Active
• Use stairs instead of elevators or
escalators.
• If possible, walk or bike to your
destination.
• Go dancing with friends.
• Join a sports team.
• Exercise after school with your family or
friends.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
• Balance calorie intake with physical
activity.
• Lose weight if needed.
Which is healthier?
Limit Consumption of Alcohol
For adults,
• Men should have no more than 2
drinks.
• Women should have no more than 1
drink.
A drink is considered to be a 12oz. beer,
4oz. glass of wine, or 1oz. shot of heavy
liquor.
