2 main characteristics
are:
uncontrolled growth

the human body and
the ability of these
cells to migrate from
the original site and
spread to distant
sites
Half of people with cancer survive at least 10
years
In 2010 2 million people were living with
cancer; there will be 4 million by 2030
50% increase in suspected cancer referrals
since 2009/10 •
The NHS has a £30bn funding gap between
2013/14 and 2020

Cancer is one of 10 priority areas in the NHS
England Business plan
Improvements in outcomes will require action
on three fronts:
1. Better prevention
2. Swifter access to diagnosis
3. Better treatment and care for all those diagnosed
with cancer
What do they do?
Consist of Core team members
Physician, Surgeon, Radiologist, Pathologist,
Clinical Nurse Specialist, Oncologist, Research
Nurse, Palliative Care.
Individualised patient care.
Meet weekly to decide treatment plan

A nominated individual with specialised
knowledge of a specific disease and cancer
who can provide support to patients and their
carers, during the malignant disease rapid
diagnosis pathway and co-ordinate further
ongoing care and/or treatment.
