UK Markey Cancer Control Program
The divisions of the UK Markey Cancer Control
Program have distinct but complementary
strengths and missions. Together, they form a
multi-faceted and comprehensive cancer control
program.
UK Markey Cancer Control Program
The UK Markey Cancer Control Program divisions integrate
• Data (Kentucky Cancer Registry)
• Information (Cancer Information Service)
• Outreach (Kentucky Cancer Program)
• Research (all divisions)
UK Markey Cancer Control Program
• More than 20,000 new cancer cases and 9,500 cancer
deaths are reported annually in Kentucky
• Nationally, Kentucky ranks
No. 4 in death rates from all cancers
No. 1 in lung cancer death rates
No. 3 in cervical cancer death rates
No. 8 in colorectal cancer death rates
UK Markey Cancer Control Program
Most common cancers in Kentucky
• Lung
• Breast
• Prostate
• Colon/rectum
• Melanoma
UK Markey Cancer Control Program
The UK Markey Cancer Control Program
• Monitors all cancers diagnosed and treated in Kentucky
• Provides this data to communities and helps local
groups identify cancer problems and find solutions
• Brings together researchers to develop new cancer
control approaches
• Operates two nationally funded research centers that
focus on rural populations, including Appalachia
• Works with a wide variety of partners across the state
UK Markey Cancer Control Program

Kentucky Cancer Registry
KCR data
• Shows age-adjusted cancer incidence rates by county
and Area Development District (ADD)
• Includes demographic information (age, sex, race,
etc.) and cancer-specific information (type, stage,
treatment, etc.)
• Is managed by a state-of-the-art electronic data
system
UK Markey Cancer Control Program
Kentucky Cancer Registry
• Shows how age-adjusted cancer incidence rates in
Kentucky are different from those reported by NCI’s
SEER Program
• Shows how age-adjusted cancer incidence rates in
Kentucky have been increasing each year since 1995
while the SEER age-adjusted rates have been
decreasing
UK Markey Cancer Control Program
Kentucky Cancer Registry
Annual Report of Cancer Incidence in Kentucky
• Presented to legislators and all district cancer councils
each year
• Resource for cancer control planners, public health
officials, hospitals, researchers, educators, policymakers and journalists
