ONION IS A VEGETABLE
 Onions contain five of the six basic nutrients
needed in our diet.
 They have water, vitamins, minerals,
carbohydrates, and protein. Onion has no fat.
 One serving of onions is only 30 calories.
 Onions contain antioxidants, which may prevent
cell damage in the body.
ONION HAS IMPORTANT NUTRIENTS
So much more than a flavor enhancing
condiment, this vegetable is a significant
dietary source of:
 Chromium,
 Vitamin C, and
 Fiber.
ONION HAS ANTIOXIDANTS
 Onions are a major dietary source of a
flavonoid (antioxidant) called quercetin.
 In research studies, quercetin has shown to
help protect the body from cancer, and has
shown anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial
properties.

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans
recommends we make half our plate or servings
at meals and snacks be fruits and vegetables.
