Web 2.0 &
Pedagogy
The Digital Native
“Those who grow up immersed in digital technologies, for whom a life
fully integrated with digital devices is the norm.” John Palfrey and Urs Gasser
What is Web 2.0?

Web 2.0 is a term often applied to a perceived
ongoing transition of the World Wide Web from
a collection of websites to a full-fledged
computing platform serving web applications to
end users. Ultimately Web 2.0 services are
expected to replace desktop computing
applications for many purposes.




“It’s vacuous marketing hype”
“Web 2.0 is totally silly”
“Meaningless”
“is made entirely of pretentious self-serving
morons.”
“a lot of thin but very hot air blown at you by
those who are convinced that having nothing to
say is by no means a good reason to shut up.”
OK… so how can I use it?

Weblogs
 Google
Docs
 Create a library weblog
 Additional or new library resources
 Introduce members of staff
 Use it as a repository of data and information by
using categories and tags
 Don’t regard a weblog as a diary – it’s an important
website in its own right…
Collaborate Globally

"Collaborative projects really make for an excellent
education experience not only because students
bounce ideas off each other and improve each
other's writing skills, but also because the process
itself teaches them how to work well with others - a
valuable skill for everyone." - Richard Ellwood, Technology Coordinator and
Digital Arts Teacher, Columbia Secondary School

Google Docs, the word processing application,
doesn't just give access to the same document, it
actually allows students to work on the same
document at the same time from anywhere in the
world.

Question:
One of my principals is toying with the idea of using social networking
tools to improve student attendance. What are you thoughts on this?
More specifically, how would you use social networking tools to improve
student attendance?
Answers from my Tweeps...
cyndyw2 cyndy woods-wilson - draw 3-5 names daily to post on the page,
must be present to win. Keep FB page as read only, but kids must join to
read
cyndyw2 cyndy woods-wilson - A school homepage where the kids follow,
get extra credit for reading @ home +
answering question from it next day in class.
bigjakelittle Jake Little - I like idea of FB as an extension of class, but how
will that incrs. attendc? Need more engaging classes, support @ home.
BrightTeacher Amy Bright
Maybe use a team of students (social media team) in charge of FB page.
Rotate kids into the team.
MZimmer557 Michael Zimmer
maybe create a page dedicated to school attendance and share contest
information or other programs?
jsquared2110 Jason Johnson
scavenger hunt at school before first period...send clues via fb...clues could
lead to very minimal but positive
ICTmagic Martin Burrett
Run a breakfast FB club? 'Food and Facebook' & 'Toast and Twitter'?
web20guru Cheryl Capozzoli
Have students submit ideas for schooling and attendance issues via fb get
the disc started include them in the solutions


With RSS and other Web 2.0 resources anything
can work with anything else
Content can be changed and manipulated into
different formats that you control
Users can get involved
Geography doesn’t matter
Speed is easy
It’s not technical!
So why not…





Create search engines for subject groups
Get users involved with a Zimbio group on an
aspect of <whatever>?
Create a Squidoo lens for a subject?
Start a library weblog?
Create a flickr group
Or…




A podcast or a radio station, both involving
music students
A Pageflakes page that you can share with
colleagues
Create del.icio.us or FURL accounts and share
them
Start a wiki for all the librarians in the area
Or even



Use instant messaging to provide information in
a different way
Create a book reading club using LibraryThing,
Amazon and a weblog
Have a library tour on YouTube
Or even




Create trading cards from Flickr photographs
Create fun/interesting new posters
Set up a Facebook, Bebo, MySpace account for
the library
Share presentations with Slideshare.net

The way we use information
The way we find information
The way we do our jobs
The way we interact with people
The way that we look at everything
