INTERNET SEARCH
STRATEGIES
USE MULTIPLE, SPECIFIC, DESCRIPTIVE
KEYWORDS FOR NARROWER RESULTS.
1. Use more than one word for your searches. It’s not
the same to look for cats than to look for wild cats,
or exotic cats.
2. Using only one word will give you millions of results
that are not always appropriate.
TRY SYNONYMS
Using synonyms can help the search engine or web
browser find more information about the same topic
that you would not see if you only use the original
word.
Instead of the word cat you can use the words feline,
kitten, tomcat, mouser
PLACE QUOTATION MARKS AROUND SPECIFIC WORDS
OR SPECIFIC PHRASES YOU’RE LOOKING FOR
This will help you find information that is more
accurate.
If you search for “wild” cats, the search engine will
emphasize in the word “wild”
If you search for wild “cats”, the emphasis will me
made on cats.
ADD A MINUS SIGN BEFORE A WORD TO SHOW THAT YOU
DON’T WANT THAT ONE INCLUDED. ADD A PLUS SIGN
BEFORE A WORD TO SHOW YOU WANT TO MAKE THAT YOU
WANT MORE RESULTS OF THAT KIND
1. If you search for cats –video, you will get results that
exclude videos of cats.
2. If you search for cats –wild, you will get results that
exclude wild cats.
3. If you search for cats +pictures, you will get mostly
pictures of cats.
4. If you search for cats +domestic, you will get more
results related to domestic cats.
LOOK FOR TWO WORDS AT ONCE BY PLACING
OR OR AND BETWEEN THEM
You will get results on both words.
