EARLY LIFE OF
CRISTÓBAL BALENCIAGA
• Born in fishing village called Guetaria, Spain on
January 21, 1895
• Father passed away just a few years after
Cristóbal’s birth
• Mother was a seamstress & after husband’s death
went to work doing laundry & pressing at Casa de
Torres mansion
• Assisted his mother with work
• Learned & studied dress making as youngster
• Marquesa de Casa Torres saw Balenciaga’s fashion
interest & organized for him to go to Madrid for
professional tailor training (she wore his early
work)
