A Teen’s Personal Guide
To Music On The Web
Student Example
Period 7
My Musical Background
 Growing up, I was exposed to many forms of music, mostly
pop rock and music ranging from the 80s to modern day.
 My parents were a major factor in my musical interests
because I grew up listening to what they liked.
 I currently play the trumpet
 Although not very often, when listening to the radio, I
generally listen to rock.
John Mayer
 Well known for Pop and Acoustic
 My favorite 3 songs are Why Georgia,
Say, and Waiting On the World to Change,
and my favorite album is “Room For
Squares”
 I like John Mayer because I prefer
acoustic and pop music, I think he has a
great voice and I grew up listening to his
music

Five For Fighting
 Well known for Soft Rock
 My favorite 3 songs are Superman
(It’s Not Easy), Chances, and 100
Years
 I like Five For Fighting because
singer Vladimir John Ondrasik III
generally combines his vocals with
the piano, and he uses it in a way
that is not common in rock.

Reggae
Originating in Jamaica, Reggae music
was developed in the late 1960s.
Reggae incorporates some of the
musical elements found in rhythm and
blues, jazz, mento, calypso, African as
well as Latin American music. Reggae
is a very symmetric and rhythmic type
of music. I like reggae because it is a
very relaxed type of music with lots of
interesting instruments that contribute
to a very unique sound.

Salsa
Cuba
Puerto Rico
Originating in Cuba and Puerto Rico,
Salsa music was promoted and
marketed in the 1970s. Salsa is the
product of genres such as the Puerto
Rican bomba and plena. Salsa also
occasionally incorporates elements of
rock, R&B, and funk. I like salsa
because it includes a variety of
instruments with very unique and
distinct sounds that when combined,
form a very interesting sound.

Irish Folk
Originating in Ireland, Irish Folk music was
developed in the 18th Century. Irish Folk is
composed by various instruments, including
the cruit (a small harp), clairseach (a bigger
harp), the timpan (a small string instrument
played with a bow), the feadan (a fife), the
buinne (an oboe or flute), the guthbuinne
(similar to basoon), the bennbuabhal and corn
(hornpipes), the cuislenna (bagpipes), the
stoc and sturgan (similar to trumpets), and the
cnamha (castanets). I like Irish Folk because
it is a very instrumental type of music and it
has a very unique sound.

Creating Music With A Computer
1. Soundation (http://soundation.com/): Soundation is an online music studio
with recording, musical effects, virtual instruments and a large selection of
loops and sounds, accessible through a web browser. Soundation is very
useful to me because it is very easy to use, and since it is available to use
in a web browser, it makes it very versatile.
2. Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/): Audacity is a free and easy to
use, multi-track audio editor and recorder available on a variety of operating
systems. Audacity is useful to me because I can work on projects in
different places because I can download the free program wherever I’m
working. It also has a ton of functions, such as converting music.
3. Noteflight (http://www.noteflight.com/): Noteflight is a free, online music
notation program that is available right in a web browser. It also has the
ability to print compositions. Noteflight is useful to me because it gives me
the ability to write or copy music into an easier to read version.
4. ACID Xpress (http://www.acidplanet.com/): ACID is a program designed by
Sony, which acts as a music editing, recording, and mixing program. When
finished, projects can be published to their website “ACIDplanet”. ACID is
useful to me because it has tons of unique functions with built in loops,
which allowing me to create my own music.
Summary
After completing this WebQuest, I have learned a lot and
discovered many new websites. As a Mac user, I have only
experimented with programs like Audacity, and GarageBand, but
after this project I have discovered Soundation. Soundation is
unique because it is very functional and available online. Not
only have I learned about new music mixing programs, but I
have learned much more about how to create a clean and
effective PowerPoint presentation, which will help me in the
future, especially with Senior Project. A new software process I
have mastered is how to create hyperlinks. After completing this
class, I plan on continuing to use Soundation in addition to
Noteflight.
