Semantic Web unleashes your data!
The Semantic Web will transform the use of Web data
Physicians are acutely aware that each human being is unique.
Different sets of genes, medical histories, and environments
mean that certain individuals will respond better than others to
any given drug. To realize personalized medicine, a physician
must consider a patient's lifestyle, living and working
environments, medical history, and much more. These patient
details must be combined with external information from journal
articles, chemical compounds, laboratory results, or standard
medical procedures. The challenge, then, is to combine a
bewildering array of data sets. The intelligent integration of such
diverse data across different domains and sources is daunting.
That is the goal of the Semantic Web:
let computers do more useful work via the integration of
diverse set of data
Semantic Web – extends the principles of the Web from documents to
data
Semantic Web – provides a common framework to share data, enabling
a more effective discovery, automation, integration,
and re-use across various applications
Semantic Web – enables computers and people to work in cooperation
Semantic Web – gives information well-defined meaning
Semantic Web – allows reasoning over the data and offering different
views over the data
The Semantic Web is a collaborative effort

Semantic Web – Application areas
Businesses, governments, and customers experience an exciting
range of possibilities using Semantic Web technologies and
applications.
Business to Business
Semantic Web applications
enable flexible and easy data
exchange and integration from
various sources.
Application areas can be:
• sharing of project data in R&D,
engineering, …
• shared human resources
• knoweledge engineering
Business to Customer
Semantic Web helps to
build richer services that integrate
various information sources, provide
better dedicated search and know
user preferences.
Applications areas can be:
• personalised services
• specialized information portals
Customer to Customer
Semantic Web helps to
improve communication
workflows, social interactions, and exchange of
ideas.
E-Government
Semantic Web helps
to integrate various
information sources from
governmental bodies enabling a
seamless interaction between
citizens and officials.
Applications areas can be:
• Semantic Desktop
• Personal information management
Applications areas can be:
• transborder data flow within the
nations and continents
• improved quality in citizen
participation and services.

Other Semantic Web application fields:
aerospace, automobile, finance, oil & gas, personal management, pharmacy.
Semantic Web – A Web of Data
A Web of connected data
It contextualizes the use of data through
special vocabularies
Existing data sources, Web content, or
databases can be integrated using
Semantic Web technologies
Retrieval of information through a unified
query interface, regardless how and where
data is stored.
Semantic Web Structure
Rule: RIF - interchange of rules
RDFS, OWL - characterization of concepts,
terms, and relationships
Query: SPARQL - query language and
protocol for RDF
Data interchange: RDF - resources and
their properties
Semantic Web applications are not required to use all these technologies: they
can choose what they really need
