The Energy Connection
•
Organisms can be divided into 3 groups
based on how they get energy:
1. Producers:
2. Consumers:
3. Decomposers
The Energy Connection
• Producers: Organisms that use sunlight
to make their food. Producers make their
own food through a process called
photosynthesis.
– Examples: Plants, algae,
some bacteria.
The Energy Connection
All of these
organisms
produce their
own food
through
photosynthesis.
The Energy Connection
• Consumers: Organisms that eat other
organisms to get energy.
– Herbivore: Consumer that eats plants.
• Example: rabbit
– Carnivore: Consumer that eats animals.
• Example: lion
– Omnivore: Consumer that eats both plants
and animals.
• Example: people, bears

The Energy Connection
• Decomposers: Organisms that eat dead
animals or plants.
– Examples: worms, insects, bacteria
Food Chains and Food Webs
• Food Chain- A diagram that shows how
the energy in food flows from one
organism to another.
• Food Web- A diagram that shows the
feeding relationships between organisms
in an ecosystem.
(More complex than a food chain)

Energy Pyramid
• Energy Pyramid- Triangular diagram that
shows an ecosystem's loss of energy,
which results as energy passes through
the ecosystem’s food chain.
