Usability
By: TaVarius Heath, Wyletta Collins,
and Victoria Williams
What is Usability?
• Usability is the measure of the quality of a user's
experience when interacting with a product or
system — whether a Web site, a software
application, mobile technology, or any useroperated device.
Usability Factors
•
•
•
•
•
Usefulness of Product
Learnability
Effectiveness
Efficiency
Satisfaction(attitude)
Diving and the diving-suit
• Using the example of
diving and the use of
the diving-suit. In the
past, the diving suits
were limited in use,
because of the weight
and permanent
connection to the
source of air.
Why is it important?
• Research has shown
that 60% of the time
people are not able to
find the information
they are looking for on
the Web sites.
Jakob Nielson
• “King of Usability”
• Is considered to be the
smartest person on the web.
• Jakob is a Ph.D. and a Sun
Microsystems distinguished
engineer. He bases his
concepts on scientific
research, not on guesses,
hunches or wishful
thinking.
• He judges websites, and
gives advice on rather they
are good or bad.
Usability Guidelines
• Make the Site’s Purpose Clear: Explain
Who You Are and What You Do
• Help Users Find What They Need
• Reveal Site Content
• Use Visual Design to Enhance, not Define,
Interaction Design
Attracting Clients
•
•
•
•
•
Put the site ID in the top left corner
Get rid of the pop-up movies and screens
Use consistent navigation
Make the buttons look like buttons
The recruiting section should not disconnect from
your main site
• Label pages what they are
• Every page should be printable
• Put a “search” box on every page
Usability Testing
The focus of usability testing is the user’s
experience with a product or process.
1. What is it like?
2. Do you need a lab for the testing?
3. How many participants do you need?
4. How much does it cost?
