Semantic Web unleashes your data!
The Semantic Web will transform the use of content.
Imagine registering for a
conference online.
Before registering you
need:
In today’s Web the conference Web
site lists
• to first check to make sure
your schedule is clear
• the event time
• and if it is to cut and paste
the time and date into your
calendar program.
• date and location
• along with information about the
nearest airport and
• a hotel that offers attendees a
discount.
• then to make flight and
hotel arrangements, by going
to several Web sites.
There's no way you can just say, I want to go to that event, and let
your computer do the rest, because the semantics of which bit is the date
and which bit is the time is missing.
But on the Semantic Web those bits will be labeled; the software on your
computer will recognize those labels and automatically book your flight to
the conference and reserve a hotel room with the click of a button.
Semantic Web – is an extension of the current web.
Semantic Web – is a Web of integrated data
Semantic Web - gives information well-defined meaning,
Thereby better enabling computers and people to work in cooperation.
Semantic Web – provides a common framework
… that allows data to be shared and enables thereby a more effective
discovery, automation, integration, and re-use across various
applications – personalized and automatically.
Semantic Web – allows reasoning over the data and offering different
views over the data
The Semantic Web is a collaborative effort.

Semantic Web – Application fields
Businesses, governments, and customers experience an exciting
range of possibilities using Semantic Web technologies and
applications.
Business to Business
Semantic Web applications
enable flexible and easy data
exchange and service
integration from various
sources.
Application fields are:
• mutual sharing of project data in
R&D / construction…
• shared human resources databases
Customer to Customer
Semantic Web helps to
improve communication
workflows, social interactions, and exchange of
ideas.
Applications fields are:
• Semantic Desktop
• Personal information management
Business to Customer
Semantic Web helps to
build richer services that know user
preferences and select relevant
information from various information
sources.
Applications fields are:
• personalised services
• more targeted offers and
advertising
E-Government
Semantic Web helps
to integrate various
information sources from
governmental bodies enabling a
seamless inter-action between
citizens and officials.
Applications fields are:
• transborder data flow within the
nations and continents
• improved quality in citizen
participation and services.
Testimonials on the use of Semantic Web

We enhanced search and navigation of a complex corporate Web site.
(by Siderean Software & Oracle Corporation)
We enabled search of web sites based (also) on their reliability.

Other Semantic Web application fields:
aerospace, automobile, finance, oil & gas, personal management, pharmacy.
Semantic Web - A Web of Data
A Web of connected knowledge bases.
… standardizes how you can publish and
access information.
Contextualize the use of data by using
ontologies.
Your existing data sources, web content
management, intranet systems or
database systems, can be connected based
on web technology and RDF.
Retrieval of information through a unified
query interface,
... regardless how and where data is
stored.
This reduces integration costs and simplifies the IT landscape, like the
RSS success story has already shown.
Semantic Web Structure
Rule: RIF - interchange of rules
Ontology: OWL - sharing meanings
RDFS - description of properties and
relationships
Query: SPARQL - query language and
protocol for RDF
Data interchange: RDF - resources and
their properties
XML - (semi-)structured data
Semantic Web applications are not require to use technologies from all the
presented layers. Since Semantic Web issues are investigated at moment, the
presented palette of Semantic Web technologies will be extended in the future.
