Virtual Field Trips
What is a Virtual Field Trip?
• A guided exploration through the Web that
organizes a collection of web pages into a
structured online learning experience.
• A way to organize the educational potential
of the internet in a coherent, appropriate
fashion.
• A guided and annotated tour of pages on
the Web that have been selected and
arranged in a "thread" that students can
follow from page to page or site to site.
The Difference in VFTs and WebQuests
• VFTs involve exploring web sites including
images and sounds. Virtual Field Trips
involve viewing and interacting.
• WebQuests involve using information to
complete a project. Analysis, synthesis,
and evaluation are required.
History of VFTs
• Started appearing in 1996
• Grew in popularity in 2000
• Number of different formats
– consists of a list of links on one web
page
– some type of navigator (or buttons) to
move through the tour

Simple or Complex?
• VFTs can be simple, such as a photo
tour of a famous museum.
• Field trips can also be extremely
detailed and high-tech that offer video
and audio segments to make the visit
more interactive.
Preparing a VFT
• Just as with actual field trips, planning,
preparation, participation, and follow-up
are required, but there are no limits!
• Choose a topic and objectives to address
• Research possible web sites to use
• Narrow the list
