1.1. Definition
The Internet is a network of computer
networks all over the world, using which you
can search for information and share information
and ideas with people all over the globe.
Did you know...
 There are millions of Web pages on the Internet.
 WEB is short for “World Wide Web” (WWW).
 So “the Web” consists of all the pages you can read on
the Internet.

1.2. Don’t forget that...
1. The Internet is growing and changing constantly.
2. Anyone can put information on the Internet so you will
also find information that is wrong, out of date or unreliable.
Bear in mind the trustworthiness of the person or organisation that
supplied the information and when it was last updated.
3. A lot of the information you will find in the library is more up to
date and reliable.
4. Take care of content that might be dangerous, such as medical
advice and certain political or religious opinions.

I’ve seen in the paper that the Picasso Museum has a Web site;
how do i visit it?
http://www.museupicasso.bcn.es
All Web addresses start
with http://
The address; bear in mind:
- The name can contain numbers and
letters, but not special characters such as
@, apostrophes, ñ, accents or ç.

3.2. If I don’t have the address... use a search engine
To find any sort of information on the Internet you use a search engine
What is a search engine?
It’s a tool that lets you search for Web pages and other
documents using key words.
What are key words?
One or several words that define the subject-matter of
the information you want to find. For example, if you wanted
to find out about train times, you would use key words such
as “train” and “timetable”.

I like adventure. They tell me you can go on very entertaining trips by
horse-drawn caravan in various parts of Catalonia. How can I find out
about them?
1. Choose a search engine, such as...
landscape caravan horse
2. Think of the key words and type them in the search box, as in this example:
3. Press the enter key or click on the button “Google search”

3.5. The results
How do I interpret the results?
Search engines find all the documents that contain the search words.
 The lists of results may be ordered according to different criteria. Bear in
mind that in some cases the first ones on the list may be sponsored by the
company concerned. In the case of Google, the search engine shows
first the pages that in theory receive most visits.
 For each page there is a short summary to give you an idea of the
content.
With all this in mind, we’ll try our example
