Big 6 Skills
For Information Problem-Solving
By Mike Genga, Paradise High School

About the Lesson
I am the librarian at
Paradise High School in
Paradise, CA
Mr. Moore graciously let me
pilot the lesson in his
freshman Computer
Foundations course over a
five-day period
Email: [email protected]
I expected to:
Create a standards-based lesson
 Use a template to create a web page for my
lesson
 Teach students to use the Big 6 process
 Teach students to apply the process to a
real-world activity

I learned
The web page-supported lesson can be a
valuable tool
 To be a creative problem solver
 To use ftp programs
 To be more confident with PowerPoint

Lesson Reflection: Successes
The student web page with hyperlinks was
useful.
 Students were actively engaged in the
project researching and comparing at least
three computers, creating a spreadsheet, and
writing an evaluation selecting the best.

Lesson Reflection:Shortcomings
Although higher ability students performed
well on the post-test, other students did not,
due to a lack of time to practice the skills.
 Some parts of the lesson were sacrificed due
to time constraints.
 A better “set” and more application of Big 6
skills is necessary.

Student Data Summary
•Some students improved on post-test while others
did not show major gains.
•Students scored consistently higher on project than
on post-test.
•Lesson improvement would involve more practice
on Big 6 Skills. Condensing lesson was not effective.
