WEB SITE
Computer Literacy
Web Design
Dr. Phoenix – 2-13-17
STEP 1: Make a new folder on your desktop.
Name it WEB DESIGN 1
STEP 2: Open the new folder you just made,
right click, and make a new MS Publisher
document. Name it WEB DESIGN 1
STEP 3: Open the Publisher document.
STEP 4: Add 4 pages to your Publisher
document (you should have a total of 5
pages.) Click on page 1. It should look
something like this…
The people looking at your web sits will use a
NAVIGATION BAR to go from one page to the
next.
Before we make a NAVIGATION BAR use a
Text Box or Word Art to NUMBER each of
your five pages.
Once you have numbered all your pages 1
through 5, go back to page 1 to make the
NAVIGATION BAR.
We will make the Navigation Bar out of a
ONE COLUMN TABLE. (1 column, 5 “boxes,” or
rows.)
Use the mouse
cursor to re-size
the table.
Drag the table
into the top left
corner of Page 1.
Select ALL 5 cells of the Table to format the
table. You can add ALL borders, fill the cells
with color, and format the text.
Your Navigation Bar
will look something
like the one pictured
here.
In this example I
used Times New
Roman, 36 point
type, aligned left.
Drag your mouse
over the first box
(row) of your table
to SELECT the
words PAGE 1.
Now, carefully
hold down a
control key and
tap the letter “K.”
This dialogue box
will pop up.
Link to “Place in This Document”
Page 1. Page Title is already selected. Click OK
PAGE 1 is now LINKED to your NAVIGATION BAR.
You will see that it changed color and is underlined.
NOW drag your mouse over “PAGE 2” in your navigation bar,
highlighting (selecting) the text.
With the text selected, use the
control key plus “K.”
The dialogue box will pop open.
Look at the “Place in the
document.”
Select
Click OK
Page2. Page Title.
REPEAT THESE STEPS
FOR PAGES
3, 4, and 5.
When all the pages are
linked, your navigation
bar is complete.
The FINAL Step is to
select the entire
navigation bar, copy it -and paste it into the
upper corner of the
other 4 pages.
Remember to drag your mouse
cursor across all the squares of
the navigation bar, selecting
them all and using your control
key plus “C” to copy.
Go to page 2 of your publisher
document, and use your control
key plus “V” to paste the copy
of your navigation bar onto the
page.
You may then move the copy
up into the corner of page 2.
Repeat the process until the navigation bar appears
on every page.
Now, put your finger on a control key and press “S” to
SAVE your work.
The final step in creating your web design
assignment is to convert your Publisher
document into a Webpage, Filtered.
Take your mouse cursor and click on the
“File” tab at the top of your screen.
Select SAVE AS.
This dialogue box will appear.
Click
Save as Type. A huge list will appear…
Click
Web Page, Filtered (*.htm; *html)
CLICK
Save
Close MS Publisher and look inside your WEB DESIGN 1 folder
You will see your publisher document, but you will also see
two items that were not there before.
Double-click WEB DESIGN 1.htm to open your web pages!
Your computer may ask you which program to use to
open your web pages.
Use Explorer (the blue, Microsoft “e”)
or Chrome (the green, yellow and red wheel)
These are actually competing software applications
(made by different companies).
The applications are called web browsers and are
designed to “read” web pages.
Your web pages will display something like this:
