Shows a door in a “not opening”,
locked position. This is what
happens when the door won't open.
Shows the door closed with
the mechanism extended past
the normal resting position
and how the star/pawl has the
ability to rotate freely.
Shows the overall
mounting of the
ratchet/bar mechanism
We are having an issue in Fairfax with the side emergency doors failing to open at times. At this point,
it appears that the side emergency door ratchet/bar mechanism mounted incorrectly. We have
repositioned a few of the door ratchet/bar mechanisms on the end that attaches to the body and it
seems to correct the problem, without having an adverse effect on the door operation. What we are
seeing is; when the door is closed the ratchet/bar extends past the normal collapsed position, thus
allowing the star/pawl to rotate freely from road vibration. When the door ratchet/bar mechanism is
new, the star/pawl is snug and will not rotate from road vibration but, as time passes the star/pawl
loosens and has the potential to rotate. If you try to open the door when the star/pawl has inadvertently
rotated, the door will not open. The door will be held in the closed position in the identical manner as if
you wanted the door to be held open, it locks in position.
We’ve looked at a couple dozen of the 2007 Rear Engine Amtrans. All appear to have the potential to
experience the same issue.
