What is Pandora?
Individualized internet radio station based on
user’s preferences
Start with a favorite artist...Pandora generates new
recommendations based on user’s review of songs
as they play.
With each additional review, Pandora adds or
removes songs from playlist.
Pandora is based on Music Genome Project.
In 2000, Musicians/Analysts created list of 400
musical attributes and an algorithm to organize
them.
Sought to map music by these attributes.
Attribute examples: melody, harmony, rhythm,
instrumentation, arrangement, orchestration, lyrics

The Process
Musicians analyze songs using a 20-30 minute
process.
Each song is given a “vector” based on its “genes”
“gene corresponds to a characteristic of the music,
for example, gender of lead vocalist, level of
distortion on the electric guitar...” - Wikipedia
Pop and rock have about 150 genes...rap has
350, jazz has 400.
Computer program uses “distance function” to come
up with list of songs with similar vector.

Listener rates songs with positive, negative or
neutral rating...but can only skip 6 in an hour.
