Strategy #1: Photo
Snapshots
• While reading, students pause in between
sections, & take a “snapshot” of important
points or main ideas
• Useful as a note taking device or a formative
assessment
• Draw a picture & caption
• Model this strategy before allowing students
to use independently

Strategy #2: Comic Strip

• Build Your Page• You need a title, name, _______ squares
• Insert You Dialogue• Print all dialogue! Neatness counts
• Use the 3 main ways to identify the speaker…
• Narrator: Storyline box above or below the
illustration
• Dialogue: Words spoken out loud
• Thoughts: words thought, but not spoken
Strategy #2: Comic Strip
• Insert You Characters• Stick figures are wonderful!
• Each time you draw a character, they should look the
same- your reader needs to be able to tell which
character is which (clothing & color will help with this)
• Use body posture and/or facial expressions to show
emotions
• Thoughts: words thought, but not spoken
• Backdrop & Coloring• AFTER you’ve written the dialogue and filled in your
main characters, then fill in the background
• Include props they would need
• Remember, your reader must be able to SEE them to
UNDERSTAND THEM
• You comic strip should be in full color
