What is Jeans for Genes Day?
What is Jeans for Genes Day?
Jeans for Genes Day raises
much needed funds for
Children’s Medical Research
Institute (CMRI).
It’s easy and fun to get involved:
• Simply swap your uniform for a
pair of jeans and make a gold
coin donation
• Hold a fundraising event, such
as a bake sale or sporting
challenge
What does CMRI do?
• Children’s Medical Research Institute
conducts the ‘basic’ research that allows us
to understand the fundamental causes of a
range of disorders, such as cancer and
epilepsy.
• This crucial foundation is needed if we are
to find ways to treat or prevent these
diseases.
• We are also dedicated to going beyond
basic research, by translating the
discoveries made in the laboratory into new
treatments for patients through our gene
therapy and drug discovery programs.
GENETICS: why we are the way we are
There are lots of
different things
that make you
‘you’ and many
are determined by
your genes….
We all begin as 1 cell
Bodies are made of Cells
Cells have a Nucleus
• The nucleus
contains
Chromosomes
• Chromosomes
are made of DNA
How DNA is packaged in chromosomes:
2.5 m
One cell has 2.5m of DNA!!!
1.96 m
1.78 m
1.63 m
1.64 m
1.53 m
Humans have 46 chromosomes (23 pairs)
female
sperm = X , Y
egg = X , X
male
DNA is needed for Information Transfer
23 chromosomes from the egg and 23 from the
sperm combine to make a human
To do this, cells need to divide…
…and DNA needs to replicate – this can lead to
mistakes (or mutations) in genes

One small mistake can cause a genetic disease

A rare mutation gave Jacqui metatropic
dysplasia. This disease interfered with her
bone growth, so she has severe curvature
of the spine, pigeon chest and problems
with her joints that will affect her the rest of
her life.
You can help CMRI find treatments for genetic
diseases. Your donation makes a BIG difference!
Thanks for participating in Jeans for Genes Day!!
You are helping to create a healthier, brighter future for children everywhere
