Basic Terms
• Traits – Physical characteristics
• Heredity – the passing of traits from parent to
offspring
• Genes – factors that control traits
Gregor Mendel
The Godfather of Genetics
Austrian monk and teacher
1851 – worked with pea plants to
study the effects of crossing plants
with certain traits with others.
Came up with a couple of rules,
and ideas of how heredity works.
Dominant and Recessive
• Alleles – different forms of a gene
– Individual alleles control the inheritance of traits.
• Dominant Allele – Always shows up when the
organism has this allele. Represented by a
capital letter.
• Recessive Allele – the allele that gets covered
up if the dominant allele is present in an
organism.
What does it all mean???
• Everyone has two alleles. One from mom and
one from dad.
• Purebred – is if both alleles are exactly the
same.
• Hybrid – is if the alleles are different.
