the night sky).

Assessment Activities


Have students make chalk drawings on dark paper showing stars of different sizes,
brightness, and patterns (constellations such as the Big Dipper). A brighter star is
drawn with a bigger dot than a dim star.
Have students make a drawing of stars of varying size and brightness. (You may
provide this to students or give them pre-cut stars or star stickers.) Ask students to
use a marker to connect stars to create a constellation. Students should name their
constellation. In Science journals have students write a myth/story about how their
constellation was created.
Instructional Notes:
Students should know:
 how to describe the size, brightness, and patterns of stars.
 that stars are scattered unevenly and are not all the same brightness or color.
 how the sun and other stars in our solar system are alike and different.
 the patterns of stars stay the same, although they appear to move across the sky
nightly, and different stars can be seen in different seasons.
