2
• Includes more than 30 diseases
• Degeneration of skeletal muscles that control

Causes

•
•
•
•
•
Genetically inherited
Incorrect or missing genetic information
Prevents body from making proteins needed to
build and maintain healthy muscles
Results in muscle fiber suscptibility to damage
Usually due to genetic deficiency of muscle
protein dystrophin

Children with MDD
9
 Usually kids with MDD are very artistic and have
average or above average intelligence, although
there are children that suffer from MDD and have
learning disabilities also
 There can be behavioral issues due to frustration,

Technology and Accommodations
10
• Special transportation
• Wheelchair (manual or motorized)
• Adapted keyboards, software, calculators
• Supportive seating
• Raised desktop
• Special pencil grips
• Tape recorder or computer for note taking
• Easier accessibilities to school and facilities
• Curriculum modifications

In the Classroom
11
• Degenerative, so promote independence now before
they become more physically dependent
• Promote active participation in class to boost
confidence levels and social interaction
• Stay positive and focus on positive actions with
student; place attention on the child’s strengths and
abilities without focusing on the disability itself

In the Classroom, cont.
12
• Use buddy system to aid in difficult muscle tasks
• Schedule breaks and allow extra time
• Stay connected with student, parents, and therapists
(team effort)
• Keep supplies sanitized to reduce virus spreads (low
immune systems)
