Do you see variation among offspring?
Could these genes change over
time?
Things to think about
• Could particular phenotypes be beneficial?
• Can the genes of a population change over
time?
• Would the inheritance pattern influence how
quickly a gene pool can change?
Purpose: To determine if the
environment affects genes in a
population and if alleles in a population
can change over time
In Fish Color is a multiple allele trait
with recessive dominant and
incomplete dominance inheritance
patterns
The green allele (G) is dominant to all other color
alleles
The red allele (R) is recessive to green(G) and
incomplete dominant to yellow
The yellow allele (Y) is recessive to green
Incomplete dominant to red
Phenotype
Green:
Red
Orange
Yellow
Possible Genotypes
GG,GY,GR
RR
RY
YY
Check your neighbor…
• What color would the fish be if it had the
following alleles?
• RY
• RG
• YG
• YY
Procedure
Follow the procedure on handout to determine
the phenotype and number of each allele in
four generations.
Note:READ THE DIRECTIONS VERY CAREFULLY AS
“EVENTS” WILL OCCUR
Note: Toothpicks represent an allele, not a fish
