Mendel’s Work
• Bred Plants for a long time (2 years
observing before started collecting data)
• Noticed several things:
– there are always 2 forms of a trait
– One form always appears and masks the other
(dominant)
– Sometimes, you can pair two dominant
phenotypes and end up with a recessive
phenotype
– there is rarely blending of inheritance
Mendel’s
Success
He chose simple test subjects.
•
• He chose easy-to-observe traits with 2 forms
(alleles)
• He chose traits which obey specific rules of
inheritance
• He discovered that traits sort themselves
between gametes (he didn’t know that this was
because of Meiosis), this sorting is random.
• He discovered that traits sort themselves
independently of one another (see vocab list),
to get a number of recombinations.
• He discovered ratios that reoccur.
Terminology
• Phenotype-the outward appearance of an
organism
• Genotype-what the genes say a person
should look like
• Important terms for determining ratios of
individuals and probability of cross
outcomes.
• Probability is the chance of things turning
out a certain way (see overhead)
Genetics Problems
• 1st-figure out the possible gametes to be
formed (which alleles will each gamete
carry?)
• 2nd-line up the gametes along the sides of a
Punnett square
– this is a tool which will always give you the
correct answer, as long as it is set up correctly
– to finish off the square, drop the gametes into
each of the small squares and calculate ratios
(probabilities)
