Information about the causes and
effects of the obesity
WHAT IS OBESITY?
Obesity is a condition in which the natural
energy reserve, stored in the fatty tissue of
humans and other mammals, exceeds
healthy limits. It is commonly defined as a
body mass index (weight divided by height
squared) of 30 kg/m2 or higher. (Encarta 2008)
OBESITY HAS MANY CAUSES:
Genetics: Genes play a part in how your body
balances calories and energy. Children whose parents
are obese also tend to be overweight.
Physical Inactivity :Overweight people are usually less
physically active than normal weight people. Seriously
overweight people may have difficulty moving.

that regulates blood sugar. When obesity causes
insulin resistance, the blood sugar becomes elevated.

of diabetes.
cancer - Men who are overweight have a higher risk of
colon and prostate cancers.
