What is color blindness?
• Color-blindness is
when you are not
capable to distinguish
the differences
between certain
colors.
Symptoms
• You may be able to see a limited amount
of colors.
– You be only be able to see few colors, while
others see thousands.
– In rare cases, you may only see
black/white/gray
Treatments & Cures
• Inherited color vision problems cannot be treated or
corrected.
• Some acquired color vision problems can be treated,
depending on a cause.
• Some ways to help make up for color vision problems:
– Wearing glasses that block glare-- people with color
vision problems can see colors better with less glare.
– Wearing colored contact lenses– may help you see
differences between colors.
Lifetime & limitations
• Color blindness is something you have for a
lifetime.
• Limitations –
– Looking at a traffic light: With around 1 in 14 men
being red green color blind the risk of misinterpreting
the red stop light and green go light becomes
apparent.
– Sitting in the sun: some people who are color blind
cannot see when they are getting too red.
– A few other examples of limitations are: children
coloring, people cooking, watching weather forecasts,
and choosing your outfit.
Incidence
• Color blindness is almost always a
hereditary trait. Red-green colorblindness
is a recessive gene passed on to the Xchromosomes.
Inheritance Pattern
• This happens when you don’t have either
red, green, or blue cone cells.
– Most are inherited and present at birth.
– Some cases:
• Can have an acquired color vision problem.
• Caused by aging, injury in the eye, or side effects
of medicine.
Type of Mutation
• The mutation that causes colorblindness is
sex-linked.
• Mostly males are colorblind. The gene that
causes color blindness is located on the X
chromosome.
