Things to Remember
1. Where did the Renaissance
begin?
2. How did people of the
Renaissance change their way of
thinking / who did they stop
believing in?
3. What is a patron?
WHAT IS IT???
•
The word renaissance is French for “rebirth”.
•
What was reborn?
– Greek and Roman art and ideas were
rediscovered, studied, and used by people
of the Renaissance.
– A revival of classical culture, artistic
creativity and learning
• Classical Culture = Culture of Greece and
Rome
The Renaissance
•
The Middle Ages brought war and the
plague to Europe
–
•
•
Millions of people were killed because of this
Those that survived wanted to celebrate
human life
They began to question institutions that
were unable to prevent war and death
• This included government and the church
The Renaissance brought many changes to Europe:
Middle Ages
• People lived in the country side
• Life was dominated by religious beliefs
and fears of eternal punishment.
• church dominated art
• learning focused on religion and the
relationship between man and God
Renaissance
• People moved from the
countryside to towns.
• was a more worldly age
• art focused on nature and
humans
• Learning focused on Greek
and Roman classics
Italy- The Birthplace
The Renaissance began in Italy about
1300AD, nearly 200 years before the rest
of Europe. then spread northward to
Netherlands, Germany, France and
England
WHY DID IT START
IN ITALY???
Italy had:
1. Urban centers like Venice,
Genoa, and Florence
•
•
People exchange ideas in cities
Rest of Europe is still rural
•
Earned money from industries like
banking
Used money to support and
encourage the arts!
2. Merchants (business people)
who were the wealthiest and
most powerful class in each
city-state.
•
PATRONS
= Individuals, families, or
organizations that financially
support the Arts. For
Example:
– De Medici Family
– Roman Catholic Church
– Wealthy individuals
• Because they pay, they
have control over what
is created!
YOUR TURN

Europe. Label the following using
page A12 in your books:
Italy, Germany, France, Spain,
England, Netherlands,

***You have 3 minutes to do this***
The Old, Middle
Ages Way
•
Dark Ages: Thought to be “dark” & “ignorant” times
•
People proved their devotion to God by:
•
1.
2.
3.
living very poorly
wearing rough clothing
eating simple, plain foods
–
none given to everyday architecture. ie homes,
stores, town halls.
Uneducated people used vernacular = local
language
Church architecture = main focus
•
•
•
Few advances in science
Greek and Roman texts were only studied to
make them agree with Church teaching
THE NEW
RENAISSANCE WAY
• Humanists: Renaissance scholars
who studied the Classics = Greek &
Roman texts
–
–
Studied Greek values
Continued the traditions of ancient
Greece & Rome in painting, sculpture,
and architecture
• Focus on human potential
• Be devoted to God & enjoy life
THE NEW
RENAISSANCE WAY
• Invention of the printing press
made information widely available
–
–
–
Creates emphasis on learning and
new developments
Published laws so now more people
know their rights
People begin to question religious
and government authority
THE NEW
RENAISSANCE WAY
•
•
•
•
•
Art can be both secular (non religious)
and religious
Paintings of people and landscapes are
more lifelike and detailed
New oil paint made colors brighter and
more vivid
Portrait Painting and Autobiographies
are VERY common
Use of vernacular in literature

Renaissance was different
from the Middle Ages
PERSPECTIVE
• Artistic technique that creates the
appearance of three dimensions on a flat
surface

We will take it step by step…you will create
a drawing in 1 point perspective!
Step #1………
 Using your paper the long way, USING A
PENCIL, draw a line horizontally about ½ way
down the paper:
Step #2………
We’ll start with 1 point perspective…draw 1 vanishing point.
Add houses, keeping the lines
Stepvertical
#3…….lines…all
go
to
either
the
or aimed at the
vanishing
point
or vertically.
vanishing
point.
