NUTRITION
Vocabulary
Metabolism:
– The process by which the body gets
energy from food.
RDA (Recommended Daily
Allowance):
– A guideline for the amount of each
nutrient the body needs each day,
based on gender and activity level.
Cholesterol:
– A waxy fat-like substance found in the
cells of animals. (eggs, cheese, meat)
LDL (Bad) Cholesterol
– Builds up in arteries, blocking blood
supply to the brain and heart (stroke or
heart attack)
HDL (Good) Cholesterol
– Protects the arteries by removing
plaque
Calories:
– Energy provided by the food we eat.
Caloric Expenditure:
– The amount of calories used/burned
during daily activity.
Sodium:
– Salt=Too much can lead to high blood
pressure
Dehydration:
– Excessive lack of body fluids
Essential Daily Nutrients
Carbohydrates
Nutrient, including sugars and
starches.
Gives the body it’s main source of
energy.
