A Creative Era
 1920s “Jazz Age”
 Jazz incorporates West African and Latin
American rhythms, elements of African
American spirituals, and ragtime, as well as
European harmonies
 Harlem Renaissance→ creative black
artists, writers, and musicians living in Harlem
→ reviving the arts and black culture
Harlem Renaissance Mini-Project
 Directions: Provide your
interpretation of the Harlem
Renaissance by describing how
artists and writers expressed pride in
their cultural heritage through their
work. For your interpretation, you
may provide examples of art, music,
theater, literature, or the Harlem
Renaissance as a whole.
Harlem Renaissance Mini-Project
 You may choose one of the following ways to
describe the Harlem Renaissance, its artists and
writers, and how they expressed their cultural
heritage:
 A VTS Descriptive Paragraph
 A Poem
 A Song
 You must provide historical evidence in
your writing!
Harlem Renaissance Mini-Project
Your project should answer the following
guiding questions:
 What was the Harlem Renaissance?
 Who were the artists and writers of this time?
 How did they choose to express their cultural
heritage?
Cultural heritage
 “an expression of the ways of living
developed by a community and passed on
from generation to generation, including
customs, practices, places, objects, artistic
expressions, and values. Cultural heritage is
often expressed as either intangible or
tangible cultural heritage” (ICOMOS, 2002).
Expressing pride in
African American culture
 “The black playwright and the black actor will interpret the
soul of their people in a way to win the attention and
admiration of the world.”

Alain Locke, African American theater critic
"The Ascent of
Ethiopia"(1932)
was painted by
Lois Mailou
Jones.
Directions…
 VTS Descriptive Paragraph: Select one work
of art or photograph from the Harlem
Renaissance and analyze it using your Visual
Thinking Strategies. Your analysis of the work of
art or photograph should address the VTS
questions and the how artist/photographer
expressed pride in their cultural heritage through
the work of art or photograph. The descriptive
paragraph should be put on construction paper
with the image you examined to represent the
Harlem Renaissance.
Directions…
 Poem: Create an original poem describing
your interpretation of the Harlem
Renaissance with specific evidence from the
text. You must have a minimum of five
stanzas with four lines per stanza. You need
to make specific references to content
covered in class in EACH stanza. PLEASE
PROOF READ! The poem should also be
presented in a creative way (i.e. construction
paper, picture, color, ect.)
Directions…
 Song: Create a poem describing your
interpretation of the Harlem Renaissance with
specific evidence from the text. This song can
be created in any genre but it must be 5
stanzas long which includes one
hook/chorus. You need to make specific
reference to content covered in class in
EACH stanza. PLEASE PROOF READ! The
song needs to be typed and neatly presented
on construction paper with an image to
represent the Harlem Renaissance.
