believed that people should
use science to understand
how the world works.

 The printing press

 Leo X became pope
in 1513.
 He sold positions of
the church to raise
money for himself.
 He also sold
indulgences to
raise money.
The Reformation
 Martin Luther, a
priest from, Germany,
did not approve of the
selling of indulgences
and other church
practices.
 On October 31, 1517
he nailed his 95
Theses, (statements
of opinion), on the
door of the church.

 The church convicted
Luther of heresy.
 Martin Luther went
into hiding, from there
he translated the
Bible into German.
 Over time Germans
became followers of
Luther, forming the
Lutheran Church.

 Catholic leaders tried to destroy this
new Church
 Many Germans protested the churches
actions and became known as
Protestants.
 Protestant Churches spread to other
parts in Europe. The rise of Protestants
caused the Catholic Church to Reform.
