Extension. How can the metals be extracted
from its ore ?
Rocks and Ores
The diagram shows a diagram
of an ore Malachite. An ore is a
rock which contains a metal
compound (mineral)
represented by the green
crystals in the diagram.
The ore is a mixture because it
contains substances, which are
not chemically bonded together.
(Mineral copper carbonate and
rock).
The mineral copper carbonate is a compound because it contains
elements, which are chemically bonded together.
The metal copper is extracted
from the mineral copper
carbonate. The metal is an
element because it has the
same types of atoms
chemically bonded together.
Extension – How can the metals be extracted from their
minerals?
Try to put the elements in order of reactivity using the
information below.
The most reactive at the top and the least reactive at the
bottom.
You will have to explain the order you have chosen.
Gold and silver were used a long time ago for plates and drinking cups, they
have been dug up still in very good condition.
Potassium and sodium react extremely vigorously with cold water.
Copper replaced Lead for making water pipes because of Lead poisoning.
Magnesium, Zinc and Aluminium react very well with steam but not very
quickly with cold water.
Carbon can be used to extract Zinc from its ore but can not extract
Aluminium or Magnesium from its ore.
Copper does not react with dilute acid and does not rust.
Magnesium, Zinc, Aluminium, Iron react well with dilute acid and produce
Hydrogen gas.
Over a long period of time Iron rusts a lot quicker than lead.
Gold is more expensive than silver.
Potassium produces a flame in contact with water.
Gold and silver are found native.

• Why is was gold and silver used as a metal
in ancient times?
• Why was the bronze age before the iron
age?
